In the not-too-distant future, a group of
all-powerful corporations have taken over the day-to-day governance of the entire
planet. War is now a thing of the past; the human race can only work out its
violent tendencies by watching 'rollerball', an internationally televised blood-sport.
Jonathan E. (James Caan) is the star player for a team owned by the Energy
Corporation – but his employers, worried that his growing fame
makes him dangerous, have plans to force him into retirement. A bleak and
uncompromising vision of a nightmarish future under capitalism, Rollerball
is one of the finest dystopian films of the 1970s.
