Historian and author Catherine Fletcher, who has lived and worked in Italy, introduces the 1985 Merchant-Ivory film A Room With A View, based on E. M. Forster’s 1908 novel. Italy held a fascination for the Victorians and Edwardians and today Florence still attracts millions of tourists in search of the iconic view. Its art and history have inspired dozens of films: what is it about the myth of Florence that makes this city so irresistible?
