ShAFF2018: Mountain Films 12A
Right To Roam - 17min
Jump in the van with Marie-France Roy and Alex Yoder as they weave their way through Scotland, exploring how personal accountability allows for universal land access and the old farm shelters that support mountain folks to rove freely.
Life Coach - 13min
When conditions became unfavorable for a first ascent of Alaska's Ruth Gorge, Alex Honnold turns the camera on Renan Ozturk for a strangely beautiful discussion about life's big questions.
2.5 Million - 22min
"2.5 Million" follows American skier Aaron Rice as he sets out to ski 2.5 million human-powered vertical feet in the backcountry and set a new world record. To be successful Aaron will have to ski over 330 days in the calendar year and chase snow around the world. The challenge will be both physically and mentally gruelling, and injuries are not an option.
Testing Ourselves - 16min
Is it possible to climb 8,000m summit in a fortnight? What type of acclimatisation is necessary and how does it affect the body? These were the questions the athletes Kilian Jornet and Emelie Forsberg were asking themselves. In search of an answer they set off to reach the summit of Cho Oyu (8,220m) using a new acclimatisation method that could revolutionise climbing.
In May, Kilian Jornet and Emelie Forsberg travelled to the Himalayas to attempt the ascent of Cho Oyu, which they had chosen as a test of their acclimatisation. As Jornet says: 'Although we did reach the summit, for us that wasn't the important thing. What interested us was to see how we felt after an acclimatisation that was totally different from any we'd done before'
As well as the experiences of Jornet and Forsberg, the film also features Dr Enric Subirats, a specialist in mountaineering medicine, who looks at the expedition from a scientific perspective and what this sort of acclimatisation might mean for other athletes.
However, Testing Ourselves is both a scientific and a human film. Jornet and Forsberg's relationship forms a key part of the narrative as, for the first time, the couple talk about what it means to make an expedition together, what the risks are and what it means to them as a couple.
The Place Of The Gaels - 25min
From the climbers and skiers who live for Scottish winter to the musicians and craftspeople who make their living in the highlands, so much of our inspiration still comes from the mountains of Scotland.
With the Rab family now extending far beyond these isles, in January 2017 we invited athletes and staff from our US Team to come and experience Scottish winter with us. This film, produced by Coldhouse Collective, catalogues their journey through the country as they discover that the weather is just as fickle, the people just as welcoming and the climbing just as demanding as they'd always heard.
