In partnership with members of the Ukrainian community in Sheffield, 1918 The Battle of Kruty has been selected for the first screening in our new Showroom Community strand.

1918 The Battle of Kruty tells the story of a group of Ukrainian students from the Kyiv military school who, amidst the backdrop of World War I, found themselves fighting against the Bolshevik forces for the independence of Ukraine. The film takes place during the winter of 1918, during the Battle of Kruty, which marks a significant event in the history of Ukraine's struggle for independence.

Director Aleksey Shaparev emphasised the film’s importance in connecting Ukraine's historical struggle for independence with its contemporary political context.
