Today we celebrate 20 years since our cinema doors first
opened to the people of South Yorkshire, bringing a world of films and events
to eager audiences.
Our wholly independent four-screen cinema, housed in a
former car showroom, has been entertaining audiences from Sheffield and beyond
since 1995, with a handpicked programme of films, special events and
educational activities for all ages.
As part of our year-long birthday celebrations, we’re asking
cinemagoers and local businesses to help raise £250,000 to further improve the
quality of the audience experience.
The money will fund a thorough refurbishment of our four
screens, with new seats and fresh carpeting plus updated foyer areas and
customer toilets. Our programme of live events, which often features special
guests and discussion sessions, will be enhanced too via the latest lighting
and technical equipment.
The funds will be raised through a range of methods,
including the opportunity to name a cinema seat as well as making donations.
There will be special events held throughout the year and there will also be
sponsorship opportunities for local businesses.
Let's hear it from our chief exec, Ian Wild:
“Our audience trust us to bring them a unique programme of
films and events - we show films from around the world as well as ones that are
made right here in Sheffield, with lots of big new releases as well as small
independent films - but in turn we rely on our cinemagoers to support our work.
“As a registered charity we depend on the public to keep
going – every purchase made here helps, as all our profits have always gone
back into the cinema. We do get some support from the government and the
lottery, but we really need the public’s help too.
“And on our 20th birthday, the best present we can hope for
is that everyone will get behind us and help us make our cinema even more
special for the thousands of people who visit us each year.”
And from Peter Brooks, Chairman of our Trustees:
“This is an opportunity for the people of Sheffield to help
revitalise our iconic venue for the diverse audiences we serve. The Showroom
has such a proud history already but we’re looking forward to giving it a new
lease of life with this exciting refurbishment. If people get behind our
appeal, we’re confident that we will soon have the best independent cinema in
the country, right here in Sheffield.” - Peter Brooks, Chairman of the Trustees
Our formerly derelict art deco building on Paternoster Row
was rescued from demolition by Sheffield Media & Exhibition Centre Ltd
(SMEC) in 1989. It is now an internationally significant cultural centre and
hub for the region. We were recently named one of the 12 Coolest Cinemas in
England by the popular travel blog Culture Trip!
“The Showroom is a local landmark; its rich, diverse
cultural programme and engagement with a wide variety of audiences, makes it
unique. The Showroom is one of a number of key cultural institutions the
Council supports as we recognise its importance to the cultural offer and
vibrancy of our city centre. The revamped Showroom will further improve the cinema
experience for the people of Sheffield and beyond. I hope film lovers will
support the birthday appeal.” - Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council
"The Showroom is one of the UK's foremost cultural
cinemas. With its diverse and lively cinema programme, home to the
fantastic Doc/Fest and with a proud legacy of delighting film audiences in
Sheffield and beyond, the BFI has been a supporter of Showroom since its
earliest days and we look forward to seeing this iconic building being given a
well-deserved refurbishment, ready for the decades to come." - Ben Roberts, Director of the BFI Film Fund
we will be announcing special anniversary events and films
throughout the year as part of our birthday celebrations.
