Strictly Showroom! A Season of Dance on Film
Join us this Easter at the Showroom for a season of unmissable dance films to get the whole family moving and shaking! With classic, cult and contemporary titles, this mini-season is a selection of our favourite films highlighting the power and the joy of dance, and its ongoing connection to the dazzling visuals of the big screen. Each of these titles follows a story of identity and self-expression and illustrates the wonderful power and possibility of dance. Over the Easter holidays, the Showroom will be screening 3 films celebrating the captivating and irresistible world of dance!
2022’S Copellia is a charming, modern fairytale for all ages, a retelling of the classic French ballet. Combining live-action ballet with enchanting animation, this is a visually opulent dance adventure for the whole family, bringing a traditional tale to life like never before. Hairspray (1988)is the most commercially successful film by John Waters, the self-titled Pope of Trash and master provocateur. This is a gleeful, camp and colourful comedy, following a teen’s fight for integration in 1962’s Baltimore. A family-friendly offering from the usually more risqué Waters, Hairspray is a heartfelt delight, full of dancing, music and heartfelt nostalgia. Finally, we’re delighted to bring Powell and Pressburger’s technicolour classic The Red Shoes (1948) back to the big screen. A landmark in British cinema, The Red Shoes tells the story of an aspiring ballerina who is torn between her dedication to dance and her desire to love. A dazzling masterpiece, this is an unmissable film for audiences of all ages!
