Summer of Soul (Early Doors) 12A
Fresh from sold-out screenings at our very own Sheffield Doc Fest, Summer of Soul is a toe-tapping, hip-shaking, rip-roaring celebration of soul music that takes immense pride in its Black American roots.
Directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, this inspiring documentary unearths stunning archive footage of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, featuring never-seen-before concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Gladys Knight, B.B King, Mahalia Jackson, Sly and the Family Stone, The 5th Dimension and more. A stunning testament to the healing power of music in times of unrest, and an incredible cultural record of the sights, sounds and styles of Harlem in the late 60’s.
