Comedian Kumail Nanjiani (starring as himself) and writer Emily V. Gordon use their own relationship history as inspiration for the hilariously charming The Big Sick, but this is anything but your average rom-com. An affectionate heckle from Emily (played by the scene-stealing Zoe Kazan) at one of Kumail’s stand-up gigs leads to a blossoming relationship between the two. However, mindful of his traditional Muslim family, Kumail knows that introducing Emily to his parents will most probably have him put into exile. But when a mysterious medical crisis strikes, Kumail is torn between following his heart with Emily, or honouring his family’s wishes.
The Big Sick premiered at Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews and it is easy to see why: it tackles complex themes of culture, religion and identity through a unique storyline, powered by a wealth of exceptional performances.
