Pio Amato is a teenager living in a small Romani community in Southern Italy, who wants nothing more than to grow up. He follows his older brother, Cosimo, as they try to provide for the family by stealing cars and selling parts. When Cosimo is arrested, Pio takes it upon himself to fill his brother’s shoes but soon finds himself in dangerous situations and forced to make life-changing decisions.

The cast of non-professional actors are at the heart of The Ciambra’s gritty realism: Pio’s family on screen are his family in real life and the people around him are from the surrounding communities. Jonas Carpignano’s film - exec produced by Martin Scorsese - brings the focus on to people living on the fringes of society, showing their daily struggles, passions and hopes with a rare authenticity that really sets this film apart.
