In The Dreamed Ones, the latest film from Austrian director Ruth Beckermann, we see a pair of young actors (played by Anja Plasch and Laurence Rupp) make a sound-recording of the love-letters between the stars of the post-war German poetry scene, Paul Celan and Ingeborg Bachmann. As the actors read aloud the writers’ twenty years’-worth of passionate, argumentative correspondence, the intensity of feeling starts to affect their own relationship. As in Beckermann’s earlier films, the legacy of Germany’s wartime past affects the present in unexpected ways.
There will be a short introduction to the film, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A. The screening is part of the British Association of Holocaust Studies Conference, held at the University of Sheffield.
