The latest from Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, Killing of a Sacred Deer, Dogtooth) is characteristically weird and wonderful. Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz take centre stage, in this outrageous period comedy-drama, each stunningly distinctive and wicked in their own right.
Early 18th century England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving in the Royal quarters. A frail, but endlessly erratic Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs on her behalf. When new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm sees her quickly moving up the ranks and claiming her spot as the Queen’s right-hand woman, setting off a bitter rivalry.
