The Last Duel (Early Doors) 18
Ridley Scott’s medieval epic The Last Duel tells the true story of Marguerite de Carrouges, a noblewoman who accuses her husband’s friend and laird of rape. The accusation leads to a trial by combat between the two, with the knight and his squire fighting the last legally sanctioned duel in France’s history.
Directed by Ridley Scott and reuniting Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as screenwriters alongside Nicole Holofcener, The Last Duel stars Jodie Comer and Adam Driver. With dramatic set-pieces akin to Scott’s Gladiator (2000) and with a story told through different perspectives in the manner of Kurosawa’s Rashomon (1950), The Last Duel is an ambitious historical epic.
