The Lost Daughter 15
Based on the novel of the same name, The Lost Daughter is Maggie Gyllenhaal’s debut feature film as writer/director.
Alone on a seaside vacation, Leda (Olivia Colman) becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter as she watches them on the beach. Unnerved by their compelling relationship (and their menacing extended family), Leda is faced with her own memories of the confusion and intensity of early motherhood. After an impulsive act, Leda is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother.
The Lost Daughter had its premiere at 2021’s Venice Film Festival where Gyllenhaal won the award for Best Screenplay. This is a bold, taboo-tackling debut film with a tense, powerful atmosphere.
