Revelatory and revolutionary, The Watermelon Woman is a story about creating your own history. Writer and director Cheryl Dunye is Cheryl, a video store clerk and filmmaker who in her search for some decent films about women of colour stumbles across a woman in an old film, credited simply as ‘The Watermelon Woman,’ and sets out on a quest to find her. A funny, fruity and refreshing story that combines fiction and real life as Cheryl’s search uncovers a host of African American Hollywood actors previously ignored by history where personal and political, real and imagined love stories abound - I’ve had the hots for you since the minute I first saw you shelving tapes...
