When a group of Hackney locals discover that a property developer has been granted permission by the Council to fell a much-loved 150-year-old London Plane tree which even has its own name, The Happy Man Tree, they rally to save it from the clutches of the chainsaw.
Director Katy McGahan started filming at the very beginning of the campaign and has created a unique insight into how a group of people came together and created a singular community around this street tree in North London.
The Happy Man Tree is touring the UK as part of a series of special events called Interventions. Intervention no 7 invites people to walk to the Showroom Cinema from trees across Sheffield. It could be tree at risk, or one that was lost, or simply a tree that you love.
Before the film there will be an opportunity to contribute to our ever-evolving Mycelium Mundus tapestry, share stories and insights, and listen to Katy McGahan's ever-evolving audio work, My-ce-My-ce.
After the screening you are invited to join a reflection on the issues that the film raises including the impact of the loss of mature trees and other natural landmarks in towns and cities across the UK. Here we ask the questions: Where Now? What Next?
