Dirk Bogarde excels in a stand-out performance as Melvin Farr, a promising lawyer who risks everything to pursue a group of blackmailers threatening gay men with exposure.
Victim is a captivating crime thriller, with Farr fighting against the shocking discrimination that left gay men victim not only to the blackmailers but also the police; they were unable to report the crimes being committed against them as homosexuality was illegal at the time. It is also a bold and forthright character study, as Bogarde’s cool, skilled barrister demonstrates fierce determination in fighting the injustices of the law, whilst concealing his own sexuality from his wife. While somewhat dated in its attitudes for a 21st century audience, Victim was a ground-breaking film of its time and an important document made in response to 60s society.
