Transformations: Moving Image Artist Announced

Katie Goodwin - Transformations

Katie Goodwin

On Saturday 11 May at the Showroom Cinema, Music in the Round and Showroom Workstation present Transformations, a very special event celebrating the dual centenaries of the birth of Benjamin Britten and the discovery of stainless steel in Sheffield.

After an open call for proposals, moving image artist Katie Goodwin has been commissioned to produce a new piece as part of the project. Describing herself as a “cinematic magpie”, the inspiration for Katie’s work is gleaned from the cutting room floor of the film production process, seeking to reveal the things audiences never see, reprocessing and exposing moments that would otherwise be lost forever.

Working in collaboration with oboist Adrian Wilson, Katie’s new creation will receive its WORLD PREMIERE alongside a live performance of Britten’s ‘Six Metamorphoses after Ovid’ at the event in May.

Katie plans to produce a six part technicolour animation celebrating British creation and lost celluloid. Using discarded film snippets and backstage footage from Powell and Pressburger films (Gilbert & Sullivan, Red Shoes, Tales of Hoffman & The Elusive Pimpernel) made during the same era when Britten composed ‘Six Metamorphoses after Ovid’ (1951). British filmmaking legends Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger created film with a striking theatrical look, often at odds with the film aesthetics of today. Katie intends to present these 20th century creations in a suitably 21st century manner, creating a sensual feast that Ovid and Britten would revel in.

Katie Goodwin said:

“I am very excited to work on this collaboration with oboist Adrian Wilson. It gives me such a rare block of time to produce something spectacular to really do justice to the film source material and hopefully Britten’s piece. I also want to celebrate British artistic and musical talent at a time when the creative sector are suffering deeply from fiscal cuts.”

The Transformations concert will also include the world premiere of a new work for string quintet and wind quintet by Music In the Round’s Associate Composer, Charlie Piper, which will be performed to film footage from the BFI archive.
