Dashiell Hammett’s Red Harvest has been the inspiration for both this and A Fistful of Dollars , and the novel’s translation to 19th century Japan displays its universal nature. A ronin arrives in a small town where two rival gangs are at war with each other. He decides to play both ends against the middle and see what happens.
