Your Name 12A
Bored of her life in a mountainous Japanese town, young Mitsuha wishes upon a rare meteor shower to become a boy in the city in her next life. This wish is somewhat granted when she wakes up in a different room – and different body – in the bustling heart of Tokyo. However, all is not as it seems, as the body Mitsuha has inhabited is that of another teenager Taki, who finds himself waking in Mitsuha’s body. They continue to swap bodies and eventually begin communicating with one another; sharing their experiences through messages and trying to help with various situations, which draw the two together.
Taking place among dazzlingly rendered cityscapes of Tokyo and the luscious Japanese countryside, Your Name focuses on apparently extreme binaries across place and gender and softens them into experiences that can be shared and learned from. Makoto Shinkai’s film is a vibrant but tender tale of adolescence that will appeal to lovers of animation, romance and adventure.
