Zlin Film Festival - Joan on the jury
Posted 10 June 2014
I was, last week, very privileged to be invited to sit on the
ECFA (European Children's Film Association) jury at 54th Zlín Film
Festival, in the Czech Republic. I am always pleased to take part in juries as
I think the process of differing opinions, reactions to films and the process
of discussion to agreement is really fascinating. In Zlín
there are many juries and I knew quite a few people out there so it was a
fantastic opportunity to catch up with international colleagues, make new
friends and see some brilliant films.
Zlín is a small city and the festival really seemed to take over
everywhere, it must be impossible for anyone in the city to be oblivious of
this fantastic event. With film, music, entertainments, parties, workshops and
more there was something for everyone and every age at this festival. What I
found most impressive was the ability to present a festival of films for
children and youth and yet attract adults also, this is a credit to the great
programme and also to the legacy of the festival as many parents and
grandparents will have also visited the festival for many years as it has been
running for 54 years now!
I really admire the
organisation, commitment and programming skills of all the festival team and I
hope one day I will return and see it even bigger!
