Alexandria, 4th/5th century AD: Hypatia (Rachel Weisz) stands as the last great classical philosopher in a world that is about to change forever. Her relationships with Orestes (Oscar Isaac), a former student of hers turned prefect, and her father's slave, Davus, bring her to the centre of political life, pitting her against the rise of Christian fundamentalism and the destruction of classical knowledge.
Philosophy at the Showroom is a series that involves sessions that probe the philosophical questions raised by some of cinema’s most intriguing films. Each film will be introduced by a philosopher from the University of Sheffield, and followed by a group discussion of the philosophical problems it confronts.
