Hard Steel + Q&A U
Norman Walker's Sheffield-set drama, filmed as part of the war effort, has not been screened publically since it was shown on TV in the 1980s. It is based on the novel 'Steel Saraband' by Rotherham author Roger Dataller (a pseudonym for Arthur Eaglestone).
Steelworker Walter (Wilfrid Lawson) rises through the ranks until he becomes manager of three steel mills, but ruthless ambition overwhelms him. He antagonises his fellow workers and alienates his smart-witted and compassionate wife Ginger (Betty Stockfeld), who is drawn to the cultured Alan (John Stuart).
Hugh Escott and Jane Hodson of the University of Sheffield will lead a discussion after the film. The screening coincides with the University’s Yorkshire Voices exhibition.
