Effi Briest U
Effi is young girl, married off at 17 to a Baron twice her age and incapable of love. Enduring the trauma of a socially advantageous marriage, Effi meets a young lieutenant and begins a quiet affair. This 1974 adaptation of Theodor Fontane’s acclaimed novel of the same name is less characteristically Fassbinder than some of his works, but instead a meticulous deconstruction of the source material with stunning technical sophistication, meticulously detailed production design and striking black and white cinematography that cements it as one of Fassbinder’s best.
