Zatoichi 18
This is a jidaigeki with a difference. Kitano takes a famous Japanese fictional character - the blind swordsman and masseur - and breathes new life into him. Zatoichi features a fine cast – including the marvellous Tadanobu Asano – slapstick humour, stylish swordplay, a rousing score by Keiichi Suzuki and unexpected tap-dancing. A triumph!
film bites: takeshi kitano
Showroom's film bites strand focused around 3 films over 3 weeks.
The course will include a study pack to enhance the season.
This season will be led by Shelley O'Brien, Sheffield Hallam University
Takeshi Kitano is an actor, comedian, television personality, film editor, painter and author, and each of these facets underpin his work as a director. Often underrated as a filmmaker in his home country, he has a unique style which has cemented his international reputation as the most original Japanese director of recent years.
See all three films and attend the study sessions for just £20 (£15 concessions).
