Family Time: James and the Giant Peach U

Ahead of Wonka returning to Family Time next week, see another classic Roald Dahl tale with a darkly funny mix of the magical and unexpected.

James and the Giant Peach follows an 8-year-old orphan who lives with his two cruel aunts. One day he meets a mysterious old man (played by the late, great Pete Postlethwaite) who gifts him a bag of “crocodile tongues”, and their magic leads James on a bizarre adventure, befriending anthropomorphic bugs who live inside a giant peach. Together, the rag-tag bunch embark on a journey to New York City in their flying fruit.

Henry Selick’s second feature film after working with Tim Burton on The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach combines his signature stop-motion animation style (later to be seen in other spooky films Coraline and Wendell and Wild) with the weird and wonderful world created by Roald Dahl. These styles work perfectly together to create a surreal and imaginative world for children who might not be ready for Selick’s creepier works!

James and the Giant Peach is rated U, though it contains mild threat. For fans of Wonka, Matilda, and Coraline.
