As rising seas threaten Miami’s luxurious beachfront, wealthy property owners are pushing inland to higher ground. Liberty Square is one of the first public housing projects in America's South. Sitting on the highest ground in Miami, the estate is now considered prime real estate and the area became the site of a proposed $300 million regeneration project. Sharing perspectives from residents, community advocates, teachers, developers, and politicians, the film follows the redevelopment from start to finish.
The film, which was shot over five years, captures the plight of the local community who are forced into mobilisation to save their homes. It presents a powerful study of the overlapping crises of climate change, systemic racism and the lack of affordable housing.
Screening as part of the Climate Realities season, in partnership with Sheffield School of Architecture at the University of Sheffield. The film will be preceded by a short introduction.
