Celluloid Screams 2024: The most fun you’ll have being scared
Celluloid Screams Horror Film Festival returns to the Showroom Cinema this month and promises a terrifying array of premieres, previews, short films and special guest Q&As to satisfy even the most bloodthirsty horror fan. Now in its 16th year, the festival has gone from strength to strength and attracts fright fans from across the UK and beyond to spend four days in the dark with some of the best new and classic horror cinema.
Kicking off this year’s event is the UK Premiere of Frankie Freako, a hilarious horror comedy in the tradition of Gremlins and Ghoulies in which an uptight workaholic accidentally summons a trio of party-obsessed goblins who proceed to wreak havoc. Director Steven Kostanski will be flying in from Canada for the screening, along with cast members Conor Sweeney, Matthew Kennedy and Adam Brooks.
Other highlights include documentary Children Of The Wicker Man, a thoughtful examination of the impact of Robin Hardy’s iconic film upon those closest to him. The documentary, made by Hardy’s sons Justin and Dominic, explores the nature of grief and memory as they navigate their complicated relationship with their late father and his most revered work. For the more adventurous among you, there’s the festival’s secret film screening, a staple at Celluloid Screams since its first edition in 2009, which is a brand new film that is only revealed moments before it begins. Fans of classic horror are also covered with a 50th anniversary screening of Amicus anthology film From Beyond The Grave starring Peter Cushing in four chilling tales of terror. Closing out the programme is the UK Premiere of Krazy House starring Nick Frost as a bumbling religious family man who must defend his family against a group of home invaders.
There’s also a fringe programme of screenings and events for filmmakers, including a free day of talks and panel discussions for those with aspirations to make their own horror masterpiece.
After selling 90% of festival weekend passes in just 10 minutes, Celluloid Screams 2024 is all set to be one of the biggest and busiest yet. Whether you fancy a film or two, a full day or a full pass across the whole event, there’s a slice of horror at Celluloid Screams to suit every taste.
Celluloid Screams Horror Film Festival takes place at Showroom Cinema from 24-27 October 2024.
