Breaking Into Film - Opportunities For Young People

Are you thinking about a career in film? Showroom Cinema works with the BFI and partners to offer young people chances to learn about filmmaking, programming, marketing and distribution through regular residentials and training schemes every year.

All BFI Film Academy Courses, in addition to the Showroom Young Programmers group, are funded by the British Film Institute, The Department of Education, and the National Lottery, these schemes are accessible and open to all, with generous bursaries to make sure you can pursue your passion for film.

BFI Film Academy Short Course - Applications Now Closed

Screen skills for young people aged 16 to 19.

Running from Wednesday 6th November 2024 until Saturday 1st February 2025, this course helps to develop filmmaking skills, work with industry professionals and take your first step into the film industry.

BFI Film Academy Specialist Course: Film Programming and Audience Development - Applications Now Closed

Arts cinema programming skills for young people aged 16 to 19.

Learn about film programming, marketing and distribution and even host your own film festival at the Showroom Cinema. Running from July to August 2025.

Free to apply. Generous bursaries are available to cover any costs that will enable you to take part. Applications are now closed.

BFI Film Academy Specialist Course: Film Curation and Archive - Now Closed

Learn about film curation, archiving and pathways into the film industry. For 16 to 19-year-olds.

Running from 17 February to 2 July 2025. Explore all aspects of film exhibition whilst working alongside well-known industry professionals, to develop new skills in film curation and archiving.

Showroom Cinema Young Programmer's Group - Applications Now Closed

Open to young people aged 18-25. Assist us in the curation of the film programme at Showroom Cinema.

Running from February to June 2025, host your own events and screenings at Showroom Cinema as part of our annual cohort of Young Programmers. Curate talks, receive free tickets and assist in the marketing of new films.

Free to apply. Open to anyone 18-25. Applications close Monday 6 January 2025.

BFI Film Academy Plus Programme

Open to young people aged 16 - 25. Explore film funds, training sessions, workshops and networking events all across the North.

Run by Film Hub North throughout the year, explore opportunities for film funds, training sessions, workshops and networking events in venues across the North.

Showroom Cinema (Sheffield) leads the BFI National Lottery Skills Cluster for Yorkshire and Humber. It will work with local industry, education and training providers, and other screen organisations across the UK, to coordinate skills and training in their area. Skills Clusters will help identify skills gaps and develop clearer pathways to employment for anyone in their area.
