Showroom brings the world stage to the Sheffield screen

From dazzling orchestras and gripping dramas, to feel good tales of an England football manager, Showroom’s upcoming Stage on Screen programme promises to feature something for everyone and brings the greatest attractions from the world stage to your cinema screen in Sheffield.

Returning to the big screen after nearly ten years, Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan feature in the critically acclaimed revival of David Hare’s play Skylight, directed by Stephen Daldry. On a bitterly cold London evening, schoolteacher Kyra receives an unexpected visit from her former lover. Captured live from Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s West End in 2014, screenings begin on Thu 16 Nov.

Dear England will come to our screens from Thu 25 Jan, following a sold-out run at the National Theatre and the West End. The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of loss. Why can’t England’s men win at their own game? The team has the worst track record for penalties in the world, and manager Gareth Southgate, played by Jospeh Fiennes, knows he needs to open his mind and face up to the years of hurt to take team and country back to the promised land.

In the much-anticipated Vanya, Andrew Scott brings multiple characters to life in Simon Stephens’ radical new version of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. Hopes, dreams, and regrets are thrust into sharp focus in this one-man adaptation which explores the complexities of human emotions. Filmed live during its sold-out run in London’s West End, Vanya will begin screening on Thu 22 Feb.

Forming a bonus, closing part of our Powell & Pressburger season, Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes returns to our screens from Fri 15 Dec. Winner of two Olivier Awards, it is an ‘utterly enthralling’ tale of obsession, possession and one girl's dream to be the greatest dancer in the world. Filmed live at Sadler’s Wells in London especially for cinemas, it stars Ashley Shaw as Victoria Page, Adam Cooper as Boris Lermontov and Dominic North as Julian Craster.

On New Years Eve, you will be able to experience the spectacular performance from the Berliner Philharmoniker from the comfort of your cinema seat. This incredible performance is the perfect way to close out the previous year and welcome in the next.
