Wallace and Gromit Come to Showroom with a Live Brass Band!

On 24 August, one of the UK’s best loved animated films returns to the big screen at Showroom with an unmissable brass band accompaniment. As part of the inaugural Sheffield Film Festival, which celebrates the rich film heritage and thriving film culture of Sheffield, the spotlight turns to Sheffield Hallam alumni Nick Park; creator of the legendary duo Wallace and Gromit.

Born in Preston, Nick Park came to Sheffield to study Fine Art, graduating in 1980. This time in Sheffield prepared him to move on to the National Film and Television School. There he began work on his first short film, A Grand Day Out, where the lovable Wallace and his canine companion Gromit made their debut.

Four years later, Wallace and Gromit won their first Oscar for The Wrong Trousers, and Showroom is proud to present a special performance of this spectacular stop-motion masterpiece in collaboration with the Unite the Union Brass Band.

See the film as you never have before, with the score performed live with a full band, plus an accompanying performance of a selection of other classic children’s songs, with tickets only £8 for all ages.

Another local festival partner, Unite the Union Brass Band have been performing since 1900 and cinema audiences may know them best from their appearance in Sheffield classic, The Full Monty

And this isn’t all Sheffield Film Festival has to offer for families; get inspired ahead of the screening with a special Adventures in Animation workshop with our friends at Millennium Gallery. On Wednesday 14 August, 12 – 3pm, we invite you to experiment with different types of animation in this fun, hands on activity, from flip books to mini, stop-motion movies. No need to book, just drop in to the Gallery for free!

Our weekly special £5 Family Time screenings continue throughout the festival, with the theme of “staycation”. Each Family Time film in August takes place in, or is inspired by, locations within travelling distance of Sheffield, reminding you that some of the best stories take place right on our doorstep! From the nostalgic Yorkshire of The Railway Children on 3 August, Nottingham’s own Robin Hood on 10 August, a comedy classic filmed in the Peak District – The Princess Bride - on 17 August, the month is rounded out with a magical Japanese take on the North of England with Mary and the Witch’s Flower on 31 August.
