FFStival: Sheffield’s First Female-Led Film Festival Comes to Showroom

Get ready, Sheffield! On Saturday 23 November, Showroom Cinema hosts FFStival 2024, a pioneering event celebrating women in film from around the world. This isn’t just any festival—it’s Sheffield’s first intersectional female-led film festival, focusing on shorts, feature films, panels, and discussions that bring women and non-binary voices and stories into the spotlight.

We’re kicking things off with Family Time at 10 a.m., a lineup of family-friendly animated shorts by women and non-binary filmmakers, including work by emerging talents like 16-year-old Autumn Poon. For the adults, things get a little edgier with Shorts Plus Born on Sunday Silent—a collection of bold films exploring themes of solidarity and resilience, followed by a Q&A with writer/director Eelyn Lee and writer Désirée Reynolds.

One of the highlights is Shanghai Girls, a moving documentary following the reunion of a high school girls' choir from 1990s Shanghai. It’s a story about friendship, change, and the journey of womanhood. We’re also thrilled that the director Luo Tong will join us for a virtual introduction and Q+A.

Join us for an engaging discussion from women working within the film industry, exploring including filmmaker Toby Poser (Wonder Wheel Productions), writer Nora Murphy, and artist and filmmaker Professor Esther Johnson.

The night wraps up with Coralie Fargeat’s thriller Revenge, a raw and gripping reimagining of the revenge genre. This intense film, along with a curated selection of shorts, promises a memorable close to the festival, from director of this year’s horror sensation The Substance.

FFStival reflects Showroom Cinema’s commitment to supporting gender equality in film through our F-Rating, highlighting films by and about women. Look out for other F-rated films this month: from mega blockbuster Wicked (released 22 November), to insightful documentary Speak Little One (21 November), as well as our action-packed Michelle Yeoh-themed, mini-season Yeohvember (30 November). The F-Rated badge showcases films written by, directed by and starring significant women. Like the Fairtrade Stamp, the F-Rated logo gives audiences the chance to #VoteWithYourSeat, and support women in film.

FFStival isn’t just a series of screenings—it’s a celebration of stories and voices that deserve to be seen and heard. Join us and be part of this special event.

Tickets and the full festival pass are available now. See you there!
