Meet the talent behind some of Showroom’s exciting upcoming releases

One of the great benefits of attending an independent cinema like Showroom is the unique opportunity to attend previews and Q&As with directors, producers and the other talent involved in creating a diverse slate of films.

For our first of the upcoming previews, we are delighted to also be joined by the family at the heart of A New Kind of Wilderness for a special Q+A. The Norwegian documentary follows the lives of the Paynes family, who live a purposefully isolated life in the forest, aiming to be wild and free. Maria and Nik, along with their four children Ulv, Falk, Freja, and Ronja are self-sufficient. They practice home-schooling and strive for a closely-knit family dynamic in harmony with nature. However, when tragedy strikes the family, it upends their idyllic world and forces them to forge a new path into modern society.

Tummy Monster + Director Q&A marks the launch of this year's Sheffield Film Festival, which returns to Showroom Cinema in Summer 2025! This special event is part of our 30th anniversary celebrations, highlighting three decades of independent cinema at the heart of Sheffield. The festival will feature exciting collaborations with filmmakers, artists and experts from across the region and beyond, cementing Showroom’s place as a cultural hub for bold, independent film.

Tummy Monster + Director Q&A will take place on Friday 9 May at 6pm, and we will be joined by the film's director Ciaran Lyons to discuss what One Take Cinema called “A wildly inventive psychological thriller… Uncut Gems by way of Glasgow”.

Later that day, at 8pm, No Tags and Gut Level present a film screening and panel discussion exploring the transformative power of underground dance music. Festival of Debate - Free Party: A Folk History - Film & Panel is a unique look at how, years before the internet, a radical and unifying youth culture exploded outside the commercial mainstream entirely through word of mouth.

On Friday 16 May at 6.30pm, we present Slam City - A Documentary by SlamBarz. The screening will be hosted by the film’s producer and assistant director Dom Heslop, and followed by a live Q&A with the five incredible young artists featured. Stick around afterwards for a gathering in our café to celebrate the journey of SlamBarz and the artists who continue to push its vision forward.
