Trouble in Suburbia

Welcome to Trouble in Suburbia. This series includes films from four different decades, showcasing how suburbia has been explored over time and within different contexts: All That Heaven Allows (1955), Poltergeist (1982), Safe (1995), and Greener Grass (2019).

As the United States navigates an unstable, divisive period, it seemed timely to interrogate suburbia. These pristine neighbourhoods, with freshly mown lawns and white picket fences, are emblematic of American prosperity, stability and conservatism. We wish to expose the cracks in this perfect veneer, with suburbia depicted as a place where rigid gender roles, class hierarchies and vicious competition breeds resentment and disillusionment. Chlorinated pools and summer BBQs have never smelled so sickly.
