A Hidden Life (Early Doors) CTBA
Terrence Malick’s latest film follows the Austrian farmer Franz Jägerstätter, a conscientious objector, who refused to swear allegiance to Hitler and fight for the Nazis in World War II.
A Hidden Life sees a return to the experimental style that saw Malick awarded the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival for The Tree of Life. The pace is steady and thoughtful, taking the time to delve sensitively into the personal and private lives of Jägerstätter and his family, while tackling universal issues of faith, religion and the corrupting influence of power.
If this is your first experience of a Terrence Malick film, prepare to be enraptured, and you're sure to find yourself seeking out the rest of his impressive body of work afterwards. Or if you're a long-time admirer, it's a welcome return to his experimental yet narrative-led style.
A Hidden Life also stars Bruno Ganz and Michael Nyqvist, in what would be amongst their final roles.
