In the final days of the Spanish Civil War, Republican sympathisers Casares (Federico Luppi) and Carmen (Marisa Parades) nervously await an end to hostilities in a remote orphanage. When Carlos (Fernando Tielve) arrives following the death of his father, he is tormented by a phantom child who relays a dire warning: "Many of you will die." A politically charged ghost story, The Devil's Backboneis a film about the horrors of war. With a screenplay pre-dating his debut Cronos (1993), itis often cited as del Toro's most personal film; the director himself sees it as his best work
