Dope 15
Laced with witty nods to pop-culture, Dope follows three LA teens graduating senior year. Malcolm – a straight-A student obsessed with 90’s hip-hop - and his friends Diggy – a spirited, fresh-faced lesbian with a kick-ass sense of style - and Jib, - the sharp-witted lead guitar player in the groups punk band – are on their way to college, finally breaking out of Inglewood (aka ‘The Bottoms’).
The enigmatic Nakia has caught Malcolm’s eye, but his affiliations with her lead the group on whirlwind of comedy misadventures. When stash of drugs winds up in Malcolm’s back-pack after he attends an underground party hosted by a drug dealer (a bizarre acting debut from A$AP Rocky), the trio endeavour to get rid of it, by any means necessary.
This is a lively and energetic film with buoyant comedic performances from upcoming actors of colour, including Shameik Moore (The Get Down), Tony Revolori (Grand Budapest Hotel), Kiersey Clemons and Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies, Mad Max). There’s also a smattering of hilarious cameos from iconic faces including A$AP Rocky, Chanel Iman, Blake Anderson and Tyga.
