Film Studies: Barry Lyndon 12A
Penniless Irish adventurer Redmond Barry (Ryan O’Neal) embarks on a perilous, picaresque journey through Europe in the mid-1700s. He eventually rises to the status of landed aristocrat but finds permanent happiness elusive. Stunningly photographed using natural light and filled with notable character actors – among them Hardy Kruger, Patrick Magee and Leonard Rossiter – Barry Lyndon is an exquisitely fashioned epic.
Kubrick’s lavish adaptation of William Thackeray’s nineteenth-century novel was widely regarded as a disappointment on first release, and despite high expectations it failed to match the box-office success of his last few films. But time has been kind, and it now appears one of the director’s most fully achieved works, setting a benchmark for period recreations.
