A graduate from the Golden Age of live television, Frankenheimer was one of Sixties Hollywood’s most vital new talents, achieving his greatest success with The Manchurian Candidate. Here he directs a suspenseful script by fellow TV alumnus Rod Serling (best known for The Twilight Zone), about an attempted military coup of the United States amidst escalating Cold War tensions. The powerhouse all-star cast includes Burt Lancaster as the chief conspirator, Fredric March as the President, Kirk Douglas and Ava Gardner.

Screening as part of Film Studies: Sixty Years Ago, presented in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University. The film will be preceded by a short introduction from Sheldon Hall.
