LGBTQ+ History Month 2025 at Showroom Cinema
This February, LGBTQ+ History Month returns to Showroom with another rich and diverse programme which highlights many corners of LGBTQ+ cinema.
We celebrate queer love on film with classic selections returning to our screens. Kicking things off on 1 February, we have a 20th anniversary screening of lesbian rom-com Saving Face, which encores on Valentine’s Day, alongside an opportunity to catch Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning Moonlight. The previous day, 13 February, you can catch iconic satire But I’m a Cheerleader, as selected by our Young Programmers to mark Galentine’s Day.
Then begins our celebration of fresh stories, with exciting previews, new releases, and special events. On 15 February, our Family Time strand spotlights a brand-new coming-of-age drama from The Netherlands, Young Hearts. This sweet film explores first loves, identity, and growing up. Perfect for children aged 12+ and their families, as well as anyone who grew up feeling different, we are delighted to be able to preview this film in a world that can oftentimes be hostile to queer youth.
From Friday 21 February, we are excited to play The People’s Joker as it finally hits UK screens after an acclaimed tour of the festival circuit and much discussion online. This DIY parody film flips the script on The Joker character, merging his story with the autobiographical tale of a closeted trans girl who moves to Gotham City to become a comedian in a world where comedy is outlawed. This colourful, anarchic comedy is undoubtedly on its way to becoming a cult hit.
As always, our programme is heavily influenced by our local communities and the stories they want to see. Within our new Showroom Community strand, we present short film package Best of Iris Prize to Sheffield, as part of the Iris Prize on Tour in collaboration with EDEN Film Productions. The Iris Prize Film Festival is one of the most important LGBTQ+ film festivals in the UK, and we are excited to showcase award-winning new talent to audiences on 22 February.
Finally, Sheffield DocFest delivers a DocNights special on 24 February. This is Ballroom is an electrifying portrait of contemporary queen Brazil, and the importance of ballroom as a transformative space for queer people of colour.
With even more to come, including new release The Summer with Carmen, future programme announcements, and further opportunities to connect, we hope this month will inspire, celebrate, and uplift the community within Sheffield.
