Oscar Nominees at Showroom Cinema

The Oscar nominations for this year’s ceremony have finally been announced and many of them are currently showing on your cinema screens. Leading the nominations was Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer with 13 nominations and the clear favourite for Best Picture. Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon received 10 nominations, and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie received 8 nominations.

Poor Things, currently showing on Showroom screens, received the second most nominations of the day with 11, including for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress, with Emma Stone becoming only the second woman ever nominated for producing and lead acting in the same year. From Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite), the film tells the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life by a brilliant and unorthodox scientist.

The Holdovers, nominated for Best Picture, is also regarded as the frontrunner to win Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay. The story follows a ragtag bunch of students with nowhere to go who are forced to stay behind at a New England prep school.

On Friday 2nd February, we are delighted to have two of the ten Best Picture nominees opening on the same day: American Fiction and The Zone of Interest.

Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest follows the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, as they build a life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp. It is nominated for multiple Oscars, including Best Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay.

American Fiction, nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay, among others, is a literary adaptation which stars Jeffrey Wright as a novelist who finds success with a book he didn’t want to write. This darkly comic satire studies our society’s obsession with outrageous stereotypes.

Coming up between now and the Oscars ceremony, we will also be screening Best International Film nominee Perfect Days, from legendary director Wim Winders.

To celebrate the ceremony on Sunday 10th March, it will be Oscars night at Showroom Cinema as we will host an Oscars Special Quiz at 8.30pm and then will show the full ceremony in our Café Bar from 11pm onwards.
