Before Elvis, before The Great Gatsby and before Moulin Rouge!, Baz Luhrmann blew the cobwebs off the world of cinema with his stunning adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Even coming off the back of his audacious debut feature, Strictly Ballroom, no one could have predicted the scale and vision of the masterpiece that followed.

Set against the urban backdrop of Verona Beach, California, the Montague and Capulet families are embroiled in a long-running feud. When Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio), a Montague, attends a Capulet ball in disguise, he falls in love with the beautiful Juliet (Claire Danes). Although already engaged to Dave Paris (Paul Rudd), whom she does not love, Juliet vows to marry Romeo. They ask the kindly Father Laurence to perform the ceremony in secret, but bloodshed and tragedy threaten the couple's future together.

With its gorgeous visionary visuals, iconic costumes, peak heartthrob-era DiCaprio leading performance and a stunning contemporary soundtrack, Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet is one of the defining films of the 1990s.
