Ridley Scott’s first feature film is a visually sumptuous adaptation of a Joseph Conrad novella telling the story of an obsessive duel between two French officers during the Napoleonic wars who literally cross swords in a series of bloody clashes that are fought with successfully ever greater ferocity and pointlessness.
