The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone 15
In the final part of The Godfather trilogy, the aging Don Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) finds that being the head of the Corleone crime family isn’t getting any easier. He wants his family out of the mafia, but the mob kingpin (Eli Wallach) isn’t eager to let one of the most powerful and wealthy families be legitimised. To make matters worse, Michael’s nephew Vincent (Andy Garcia) wants a piece of the Corleone’s empire – and he also wants Michael’s daughter, Mary (Sofia Coppola).
Matching its predecessors in its epic scope, beauty and narrative intensity, The Godfather Part III was re-edited (and retitled) by director Francis Ford Coppola to mark the film’s 30th anniversary. Viewing the saga as an unfinished work to be updated, restored and reordered rather than an immutable moment, Coppola offers audiences a new beginning and ending, seeking to illuminate the film’s narratives about mortality and redemption.
