In her directorial debut, Jamie Babbit’s But I’m A Cheerleader is decades ahead of its time. Following Megan, head cheerleader and popular girl with a boyfriend she hates, Megan’s parents suspect she is a lesbian, so send her to a conversion therapy camp. Megan denies that she’s gay until she meets Graham, a cynical, rebellious girl and they team up to escape the facility.
But I’m A Cheerleader celebrates female relationships of every form: familial, friendship and romantic in a hilariously satirical yet deeply moving way.
Starring Golden Globe nominated Natasha Lyonne, SAG Award winning Clea DuVall and BAFTA nominated RuPaul Charles, But I’m A Cheerleader creates a social commentary through comedy which allows audiences to see how ridiculous it is to think conversion therapy works. But I’m A Cheerleader champions women, love and challenging the status quo, leaving audiences educated about social issues whilst remaining light-hearted and heartwarming.
But I’m a Cheerleader was nominated for the Exposé and Human Rights Awards at the US Political Film Society Awards and won the Audience Award for Best Feature Film (Meilleur Long Metràge Fiction) and the Graine de Cinéphage Award at the Créteil International Women’s Film Festival.
