In the Heights: Feelings of Togetherness

I sometimes joke that programming for an independent cinema puts me in the business of misery. I love our film programme with my whole heart, but I'd be lying if I told you, I didn't often shed a tear or two in our screens. Usually, films loaded with emotional and cultural complexities also present hardships in one way or another. Even the films that feed the soul - like Minari and Nomadland – break your heart before mending them.

Well, in times like these, we're all in need of a little bit (or a lot) of joy and sparkle, which is why from Friday 18 June, you can join us for "the feel-good film of the summer" In The Heights.

In The Heights is the latest musical from Lin Manuel-Miranda, creator of the award-winning, crowd-pleasing hit Hamilton and directed by John M. Chu, the man behind box-office hit Crazy Rich Asians. Like both of those works, In The Heights carries a rich cultural specificity that elevates the film beyond what you may expect from your average summer smash-hit. It's a lively, authentic celebration of community and cultural heritage, and a spirit-lifting portrait of the immigrant dream. To put it simply, it's an absolute delight.

What's more, it's the kind of cinematic treat that will have you clapping along in your seat. A genuinely electrifying theatrical screening feels like a privilege to experience as a collective. It creates a feeling of togetherness that we all so desperately craving right now. And in this heatwave, there couldn't be a more appropriate film. You can practically see the steam rising from the hot New York pavements (though you'll be much more comfortable thanks to our fully upgraded fresh air-conditioning and social distanced seats). Then after the film, you can relive the highs with a drink (or two) on our sun terrace, which is not quite Washington Heights (but we do have hot dogs).

This weekend, we will also be taking part in National Lottery Cinema Weekend. Through the BFI, the National Lottery is a major supporter of British film and cinema, funding everything from independent cinemas to the production and distribution of many of the incredible British films you see on our screens. As a thank you to players who help fund this fantastic work in film, Lottery players can claim two free cinema tickets for Saturday 19 or Sunday 20 June. Listings can be found, and tickets reserved at cinemaweekend.co.uk.

In the Heights is screening at Showroom Cinema from Friday 18 June. Tickets are on sale now.
