Young Programmers Takeover: Jennifer’s Body 15
This film is F-Rated
Celebrating the empowerment of women in the film industry. Read more >
After Indie Rock band ‘Low Shoulder’ botch a satanic ritual, their sacrificial cheerleader and high-school popular girl Jennifer Check (Megan Fox) becomes possessed by a man-eating succubus who’s hungry for flesh. As Jennifer makes a meal of the high-school hierarchy of Devil’s Kettle, it falls to her best-friend and childhood playmate Needy Lesnicki (Amanda Seyfried) to fight for an end to her cannibalistic murder spree. Unbeknown to Needy, it’s her boyfriend Chip (Johnny Simmons), who's next on Jennifer’s menu.
Since 2009, Karyn Kusama’s satirical horror-flick has experienced a reinvigoration amongst audiences who, in rejecting the film’s initial reception, now proclaim that “Jennifer is back. She lives again” (Constance Grady, Vox). With recognisable influences from Ginger Snaps (2000) and Carrie (1976), Academy Award winning script writer Diablo Cody’s peppy dialogue is galvanised by Kusama’s direction, both of which are stylistically marked by the early-millennium.
Fifteen years on, join us to celebrate this newly-embraced cult favourite and all things ‘Y2K’ as we profess that “Jennifer’s Body would kill if it came out today” (Frederick Blichert, Vice).
Selected by the Showroom Young Programmers, this screening will be accompanied by a short introduction.
