KaiJuly Raids Again!

KaiJuly Raids Again! and this year we’re celebrating 60years of Gamera, the giant, fire breathing guardian turtle! This season is a celebration of all thing’s kaiju, of giant monsters, rubber suits, of nuclear horrors, mystical fantasy, and royal rumble free-for-alls. Expect further appearances from King Ghidorah, Mothra, Rodan, the colossal divine-spirit Daimajin, and the original King of Monsters, Godzilla!

The Gamera franchise began in 1965, with Gamera – The Giant Monster produced by Daiei Films as a competitor to the titanically popular Godzilla franchise. The series immediately forged its own identity, positioning its titular monster as a hero to all children despite more violent action and kaiju blood.

The Showroom is excited to screen five films as part of our Kaijuly season. This selection explores a wide breadth of the kaiju canon, from Gamera’s beginnings as an atomically awakened ancient deity (Gamera, 1965), through the pulp sci-fi enthused debut of Monster Zero in Ghidorah – The Three Headed Monster (1964), the wintry samurai-era epic Wrath of Daimajin (1966), the black & white re-edit of the Oscar winning return of the Toho titan (Godzilla – Minus One/ Minus Color, 2023), and finally the first film in the beloved Heisei trilogy, Gamera – The Guardian of the Universe (2016).

KaiJuly: Wrath of Daimajin 12A: Japanese with English Subtitles; In the wintry mountains of Japan, a corrupt Lord kidnaps peasants of a nearby village, forcing them to toil in the treacherous sulphur mines. A violent divine spirit is released and wreaks havoc across the land.

KaiJuly: Gamera – Guardian of the Universe PG: Japanese with English Subtitles; Reports of a new species of giant bird escalate when the terrifying Gyaos, begin attacking the city. An ancient guardian turtle is awoken through a mysterious bond with a young girl and soon arrives to face off against the monstrous threat.

KaiJuly: Godzilla Minus One Minus Colour 12A: Japanese with English Subtitles; In post-war Japan, surviving pilot Kôichi is tortured by guilt and vivid dreams of a giant monster. His worst nightmare becomes reality when Godzilla emerges from the depths. See this uniquely personal kaiju film in stunning monochrome.
