Film Studies Lecture: Late Kubrick

Never a prolific filmmaker even at the height of his career, Kubrick made only three films in his last two decades as a director, with increasingly long gaps between each one. Nevertheless, they all saw him explore new territory: the horror film with Stephen King’s The Shining (1980); the Vietnam War in Full Metal Jacket (1987); and the dreamlike melodrama of Eyes Wide Shut (1999). Reception of these late works followed an established pattern: initial disappointment and incomprehension, followed some time later by favourable re-evaluation. Kubrick’s own reputation has come up for reassessment by scholars in recent years, and in this last session we will consider his creative achievement in the light of new research and changing critical perspectives.
