Lynne Ramsay’s second feature film following her debut Ratcatcher, which screens at Showroom all week from the 12 April, follows supermarket checkout girl Morvern Callar, who wakes on Christmas morning to discover that her troubled boyfriend has died by suicide.
He leaves behind the unpublished manuscript to his first novel and a sum of money intended to pay for his burial. Instead, Morvern attempts to use both to reinvent her life.
This film was chosen as part of the Showroom Spotlight strand by our Assistant Food and Beverage Manager, Drew Wilson:
“Morvern Callar, directed by Lynne Ramsey is my favourite film of all time. If you tear through its slightly ambiguous and almost surrealist surface - you are forced to watch something no one ever wants to face, pure and distilled grief. It will chill you to the bone but will also give you some semblance of catharsis in ways you really won’t expect it to.”
Drew will give a brief introduction before the film.
