Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton) are two old friends having worked at the same trendy New York magazine in their youth. Having lost touch, Ingrid is now an established novelist and Martha, a war journalist, are brought back together when Martha, suffering from cervical cancer asks Ingrid to be by her side at the end.
Compelled to Martha’s side, Ingrid begins to reconnect with her through their reflection of their missed years together and their relationship with their shared ex (played by John Turturro). Their bond forms whilst recalling Martha’s fractured relationships with her daughter and her experiences as a war journalist. Seeking companionship and comfort from an old friend at the end of her life and looking to escape the agony of the final days of terminal cancer, Martha asks Ingrid to be with her when she takes a euthanasia pill, ending her suffering.
Following it’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival where it picked up the Golden Lion award, Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film (and his first in English language) is adapted from Sigrid Nunez’s novel ‘What Are You Going Through’, bringing together two powerhouse performers in Swinton and Moore, underpinned by the director’s usual striking visuals and rich, emotive storytelling.
